The increase in demonic characters and themes has given rise to the subgenre Demons. The term demon does not only encompass literal demon characters but also extends to other entities such as monsters, beasts, ghosts and other demon-type figures. The demons characterised in manga can come from biblical backgrounds or quite often from Japanese culture. This category is not just linked with the horror genre; it surprisingly blends well with other genres as well as a side story or bi-line.
